Best Premier League Programme 2016-17

Winner – Burnley

The 2016/17 winners are Burnley. ‘Turf’ doesn’t skimp on the thickness of its paper, and feels far chunkier in the hand than 84 pages. The front cover has a player image in sky blue against a maroon background, with the squad listed, whilst the back cover features a player in the appropriate colours of the visiting team and their respective squad. The title wording is embossed and just visible, but it works very nicely as a piece of design. Inside, the layout is clean and easy on the eye, with excellent touches such as the outlined iconic images of the manager, captain and chairman for their columns. The featured player interview is an eight pager followed by a social media Q&A with another squad member.

The opposition section is very distinct using the away side’s colour as a background, and runs for six pages. ‘On This Day’ recalls past matches over three pages, before the history section officially kicks in with the standout feature. This is followed by ‘From the Vault’ and ‘Debuts to Remember’. ‘Kitted Out’ allocates two pages to a past Burnley strip, recalling a player who played in it and a particular match in which it was worn. ‘From Fourth to First’ looks back on the 1991/92 season when the club were in the 4th Division whilst ‘Memorable Milestones’ has a current player relaying the highs and lows of their days at the club. To finish, ‘The Last Word’ sees a former Clarets player answer questions about his career. A very strong issue with an excellent variety of content.

B5 perfect bound, £3. Standout article/feature – ‘Get With The Programme’ – Two issues from past meetings with the opponents are focused on over four pages.
